2019 Agrovista Award joint 3rd place winners: Aimee Withinshaw and Llyr Hazzelby

Aimee, BSc (Hons) Agriculture, undertook the McDonalds Progressive Young Farmers Placement, now in its eight year, specialising in poultry supply chain. This gave her the chance to work in the hatchery, breeder rearing, laying, broiler and factory along with spending numerous insight days with other McDonald’s food producers looking at beef, milk and potatoes.

Aimee said: “Placement was a really valuable experience and I learnt so much about myself. Being able to fit into so many different teams including factory and hatchery massively boosted my confidence. It was really great to learn how to adapt to working in different parts of the industry.”

Llyr, BSc (Hons) Agriculture, spent a year with KC and DA Hughes, a family dairy in Warwickshire with around 600 autumn calving cows. He had the chance to work with both long-standing and new staff, gaining responsibility as the year progressed to the point where he was acting as Assistant Herd Manager and received an offer of graduate employment.

Llyr Hazzelby said: “More than anything, learning the people management aspect of the dairy farm job was invaluable. It was a big team for a dairy farm and working together with the different departments on site to solve problems was really rewarding.”
